My Research Experience

Course Description: Emphasizes the tools and techniques used to solve scientific problems. Topics include use and design of experiments, use of statistics to interpret experimental results, mathematical modeling of scientific phenomena, and oral and written presentation of scientific results. Students will perform four independent inquiries, combining skills from mathematics and science to solve research problems. Required for Physics teaching licensure track; not available as upper-division elective in content area. This is a writing intensive course.

PHYS 468W: Research Methods in Math and Sciences
Reflection for PHYS 468W

PHYS 468W was a valuable course that helped me understand the scientific process from a hands-on, inquiry-based perspective. Over the semester, I completed four independent research projects that integrated both math and science. These projects required me to ask meaningful questions, design and carry out experiments, analyze data using statistical and mathematical tools, and communicate my findings through written reports and oral presentations.

One of the most important skills I developed was the ability to interpret data using evidence-based reasoning. I learned how to construct mathematical models and apply statistical methods to draw conclusions, skills that not only helped in the course but will directly support how I teach problem-solving and analysis in the classroom.

This course also strengthened my scientific writing and presentation skills. Writing in a professional format and presenting my results helped me become more confident in communicating complex ideas clearly, something that is essential in teaching. I also gained a better understanding of how scientific knowledge evolves through research and peer review, and how that knowledge eventually becomes part of what students learn.

Overall, PHYS 468W helped me grow as both a researcher and an educator. It gave me practical experience with inquiry-based learning, showed me how to support critical thinking with real data, and prepared me to guide my future students through their own learning investigations.
